Kenya’s Reaffirms its Commitment to Advancing Sustainable and Low-Carbon Maritime Transport

The Principal Secretary, State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs, Mr. Aden A. Millah, has reaffirmed Kenya’s commitment to advancing sustainable and low-carbon maritime transport as the country takes a leading role in Africa’s transition towards green shipping.

‎The PS made the remarks while chairing the MTCC-Africa Steering Committee meeting alongside key partners, including Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), the Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) and the MTCC-Africa Secretariat.

‎He said Kenya remained committed to strengthening partnerships that promote innovation, sustainability and the adoption of green technologies across the maritime sector, noting that the transition to low-carbon shipping requires sustained collaboration among governments, regulators, academia, industry and development partners.

‎Under Phase II of the Global MTCC Network (GMN), PS Millah said the focus is shifting from implementing activities to demonstrating measurable impact. He noted that pilot projects are being closely evaluated to generate actionable data on emissions reduction for ports and vessel operators, while procurement frameworks are being aligned to create opportunities for African innovators and local technology solutions.

‎The PS further emphasized that decarbonizing maritime transport requires long-term strategies that extend beyond individual project and grant cycles. He said stronger institutional partnerships, regulatory support and innovative financing mechanisms would be critical in unlocking green investments and developing sustainable maritime infrastructure across Africa.

‎He highlighted the importance of strengthening coordination between JKUAT, KMA and the State Department for Shipping and Maritime Affairs to address operational and administrative bottlenecks.

‎He said improved coordination would facilitate the implementation of International Maritime Organization (IMO) standards and ensure that Kenya continues.
