Marine Pollution Control
The State Department has taken proactive steps to prevent, reduce, and manage marine pollution in order to protect coastal and marine ecosystems and ensure safe and sustainable use of maritime resources. Through the development and enforcement of policies aligned with national laws and international maritime conventions, the Department works to control pollution arising from shipping activities, ports, offshore operations, and coastal development.
Key initiatives include monitoring and regulation of ship-generated waste, oil spill prevention and response preparedness, and the promotion of environmentally responsible practices within ports and maritime facilities. The Department collaborates closely with relevant agencies, coastal communities, and private sector stakeholders to strengthen compliance, enhance surveillance, and improve rapid response capabilities to pollution incidents.
In addition, the State Department supports public awareness, capacity building, and the adoption of cleaner technologies, such as ship-to-shore technology, to reduce environmental risks and improve marine environmental quality. These efforts contribute to the conservation of marine biodiversity, the protection of livelihoods dependent on healthy seas, and the advancement of sustainable maritime development.
